Medical College of Georgia says it doesn't have the money to buy Gilbert Manor.

Hundreds of families have been relocated from Gilbert Manor to make way for the Medical College of Georgia's expansion, but Tuesday the school told NBC Augusta it doesn't have the money in its operating budget to buy the property.

The school has asked the city to buy the $10,000,000 piece of property so it can expand. Some city leaders say it would be a good investment, creating jobs, and ensuring that MCG remains in Augusta.

"We can spend 'x' number of dollars and multiply that by 20 in the investment we get in our community," said Richmond County Administrator, Fred Russell.

Leaders say one idea is to take out loans to pay for the property and pay it back with special purpose local option sales tax dollars.
