Strong Storms Strike South of Augusta Sunday Morning

Strong storms that possibly produced tornadoes struck counties south of Augusta Sunday morning.

In Jefferson County, George Lightfoot reports trees down and power outages in Louisville. A nurse from Jefferson Hospital says power went out at about 6:45 a.m. She says back-up generators kicked in and patients are fine.

In Jenkins County, a caller reports damage just south of Millen. Mobile homes have been turned over and roofs pulled from some homes. Damage is also reported near West Old Savannah Road and Oak Hill Church Road.

NBC Augusta crews will have full damage reports tonight on our newscast.

If you ride down Rosemary Church Rd in Millen it is devastating. Rosemary Baptist church is damaged pretty bad as well as the house owned by the church. Mobile homes are turned upside down and crushed....numerous trees down and not only roofs, but bricks are stripped off of houses as if they were toy homes. It really is very sad. Tombstones down at the Oak Hill Baptist church cemetery. It is a sight - whole barns crushed like pancakes. Thank God there wasn't any more damage than this!

My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their homes in this night of terror. My family and I lost our home nearly three years ago to Hurricane Wilma in South Florida before we moved up here. It is heartbreaking and no one who hasn't been through it can imagine what it's like. God bless each of you, protect you and help you to heal and to prosper in times ahead.
