Fuel Tax Break To Help Georgia Farmers

MACON, Ga. (AP)- Governor Sonny Perdue has signed an executive
order suspending the state sales tax on diesel sold for off-road uses, like farming.

Perdue said farmers still struggling with fallout from the drought are now facing record fuel prices. The state had been charging a four percent sales tax for off-road diesel, which is dyed red to differentiate it from the on-road variety.

The Georgia Farm Bureau had been pushing for the tax break.

Farming is Georgia's largest industry. The move is expected to cost the state between $2 million and $4 million in lost revenue.

The tax will be suspended until the state Legislature returns in January 2009.

The tax break is nice for farmers. But what about us "regular" citizens. Don't we deserve a break as well. Sure, it helps the farmers get the produce and crops to the market place, but with gas being almost $4.00 per gallon, how are we suppose to get to the market place to purchase these items? Why not suspend the state tax on ALL fuel. Sure, it will cost in lost revenue, but the Government will always find more ways to tax us and make that money back.
