There are some questions about an Augusta lawmaker, his job and his vote on auto insurance legislation.

NBC Augusta is investigating what some are calling a conflict of interest.

On March 6, 141 Georgia Representatives voted yes for Senate Bill 276. The bill, which was signed into law Wednesday, will allow insurance companies to raise rates on most automobile insurance policies without the Insurance Commissioner's approval.

All of Augusta's lawmakers, including Quincy Murphy voted in favor of the legislation.

NBC Augusta has uncovered a potential conflict of interest when we learned Murphy, who sells insurance for Allstate, voted yes for the legislation.

"When they're voting on a piece of legislation where they could potentially benefit, the ethical thing to do is to have full disclosure and recuse one's self," Augusta State University Government Ethics Professor Steven Weiss said.

NBC Augusta also learned at least two insurance companies donated a total of $750 to Murphy's campaign during the last two years.

Murphy is not the only local lawmaker to accept money from insurance companies. A check with the state's Ethics Commission shows four other elected officials received a total of more than $2,200.

We tried to contact Representative Murphy, but our calls were not returned.
