Officers in Aiken say a new program is helping them keep you safe on the road. NBC Augusta found out a team of just two has written more than 1,000 tickets.

It's Aiken's most dangerous intersection, but in the past four months, Aiken Public Safety has helped make Whiskey and Dougherty a lot safer.

"The problem was running red lights, we did selective enforcement and stopped a number of motorists," said Officer Jason Griffin, Aiken Public Safety.

The intersection went from seven wrecks in December to none this month.

It's part of Aiken's HEAT team. The special traffic force launched in January with a state grant and since then it has written more than 1,400 tickets.

NBC Augusta rode along with one of the team's two officers and within minutes Officer Griffin was making his first stop.

"What we did is issue a citation for not wearing a seat belt," he said.

Everything about the teams cars is state of the art including the radar, which can detect speeders from any direction.

"We have high-tech cameras, even a computer," he said. It can pull up driving records and warrants.

But the equipment means nothing without a driver and for Officer Griffin it's about more than writing tickets.

"We're out here to save lives," he said.

If a few months are any indication Aiken's safer with HEAT on, unless you're a speeder.
