I think it is much better not to declaw a cat. That takes away a natural defense to escape from predators. My Aunt adopted a cat from a shelter and is sorry the cat had been declawed. Cat "Boss" has adjusted well but Auntie does not allow him outside long. Coyotes may be in the woods near her house.Boss would not be able to climb a tree to escape. My cat Susan goes outside but I walk her so she will not try to kill birds. She has her claws and loves to climb trees. Try a Scratching post!ABS

Aquasiren -I'm glad they didn't allow you to adopt a kitten at the CSRA Humane Society. It's not only their opinion declawing is wrong, in Europe it is against the law to perform such a cruel and barbaric act on an animal. Read the literature they have available, do some research before you have an amputation performed on a helpless feline.

"Aquasiren" should read some national humane groups' statements (organizations such as HSUS, ASPCA, National Humane Education) on how inhumane declawing is. Visit the pedigreed cat registry websites, too, and read their views on declawing. (Cat Fanciers Assoc "CFA", The International Cat Assoc "TICA"). Cat Fancy magazine and its website also have information on why declawing in wrong. The inhumane nature of declawing a cat is NOT simply one person's opinion vs. another person's opinion.

I went to the shelter this past weekend to adopt a kitten for my family. We have had cats and dogs all of my life. They are cherished members of our family. They sleep in our beds, are loved unconditionally. Because I checked that we would have our cat declawed, we were denied admittance. Every one is allowed an opinion, but because mine differs from yours, doesn't mean yours is right and mine is wrong. One more animal denied a loving home due to someone assuming their way is the only way.
