Richmond County School Bus Drivers Say Students At Risk

By Dustin Blanchard dblanchard@nbcaugusta.com

Richmond County school bus drivers say your most precious cargo could be at risk.

Bus drivers have had about 70 accidents in the last five months.

Drivers say that's because they're stretched too thin. Many of them have to run two stressful routes a day.

The District's Education Council met Wednesday to try to find ways to recruit and retain drivers.

Drivers told NBC Augusta they're glad the council is finally addressing low driver morale.

But they say if things don't improve even more drivers might not return next year.

I'm not at all in disagreement with the reality something is amiss at a facility that can not keep their school bus drivers. I would like to know how many drivers are concerned out of how many working there at the facility and what the problem seems to be with keeping bus drivers behind the wheel of their school buses? Facilities that support their drivers and provide adequate pay and benefits ought not to be having difficulty keeping the help. Something seems amiss. Would like to know what.

I am glad your school bus drivers are standing up for themselves. In Kansas, we have a one-eyed driver and a driver who has had 3 accidents with citations in less than 5 yrs and the school board does noting.

Ms. Sallie Thomas has been trying to alert the board to problems with transportation for years. How long is going to take before they listen to her and then act on it. She knows what she is talking about.
