Richmond County investigators say they are taking a second look at the death of an Augusta man, seven months after he died. That's after his wife, Betty Neumar, was charged in a murder-for hire plot against her previous husband, who died more than 20 years ago.
Investigators say they decided to look into John Neumar's death after learning his wife Betty was married five times and all of her husbands are dead.
Investigators say it's too early to tell, but they say they are digging into John Neumar's medical records and questioning those closest to him to find out if there was any foul play.
John Neumar's children say they hope this investigation will help bring to light some unanswered questions.
"It had been eight or nine years since I talked to him last," said Kathy Scarlett, Neumar’s Daughter.
It's a relationship, Kathy Scarlett says, that ended when her Dad, John Neumar, married Betty Neumar.
"He said how do you feel about a wedding? I couldn't say anything. He said are you sitting down? I said yeah, not that low," said Scarlett.
Scarlett says they barely knew her father's new bride.
"The only thing I knew was that she was a widow," said Scarlett.
Scarlett says soon after the wedding, Betty severed any relationship she and her brother had with her father. She claims, Betty went as far as blocking their phone calls to the house.
"I don't understand why he let it go the way he did. He taught me so many things, and then he shut the door," said Scarlett.
But then in October of 2007, Scarlett found out that her father had died.
"I was dumb founded. I knew after talking to him back in April, he wasn't feeling well," said Scarlett.
The shocking news didn't come from Betty, but a small excerpt from the obituaries. Scarlett says her father was cremated way before an autopsy or before she or her brother got a chance to see him. But at the time, she didn't see the need to question her father's death.
"We just assumed that she's a widow and her husband died no questions asked," said Scarlett.
Questions that didn't surface until last week when Investigators in Stanly County, North Carolina charged Betty Neumar with hiring someone to kill her previous husband, Harold Gentry, more than 20 years ago.
Now the Richmond County sheriff's office is looking into the death of John Neumar. They hope to give his children some closure.
"I'm ready to find out. I want to know what happened. I don't want this to go untouched," said Scarlett.
Doctors told John Neumar's children that their father died because of septic shock and a blood clot that caused his intestines to stop working.
The Stanly County Sheriff says Betty Neumar waived extradition and should be back in Stanly County by the end of this week.
