It's not something you hear about every day, but some women in Aiken are lining up to give their hair away.
It's not your normal haircut.
“It will take some getting used to,” said Krystal Rowe, hair donor.
Her haircut is free at Regis Hair Salon in Aiken because she's donating her hair. Up to 12 inch ponytails of all kinds and colors of hair, bagged and shipped off to Locks of Love and Wigs For Kids to be made into wigs; a confidence boost for kids fighting cancer or a medical hair loss condition.
“Those kids they go through so much. So many other kids pick at them because they don't understand,” said Beverly Pride, hair donor.
Each woman's reason for donating is a personal one. Wendy Temple has been growing her hair for the last three years.
“In 2001 three members of my family were diagnosed with breast cancer. I can't do anything to help them but I can do this,” she said.
“I had two grandmothers that passed away from cancer so I feel the need to help,” said Holly Robinson, a stylist.
Its the second time organizer Judy Sanders has donated her hair.
“Hey it's only hair and think of what you are doing for these kids. Your hair may grow back theirs may never grow. I hope they enjoy my hair because I've enjoyed it,” she said.
Regis Hair Salon will continue taking hair donations through Wednesday, June 18. They are located 2645 Whiskey Road in Aiken. It takes about 20 ponytails to make one wig.
