Thousands of Richmond County students don't know if they'll advance to the next grade when school starts back in just a few weeks because they did not pass the CRCT retest.

Richmond County Superintendent Dana Bedden said he has been flooded with calls from concerned parents.

Students and their parents are now worried and questioning if they will be able to move on to the next grade. The biggest problem area was math.

More than half of the students who took the test failed it.

Bedden says the problems likely stem from the change in curriculum.

“In math we only had a 45 percent pass rate but that’s not new and that's not a surprise when you look across the state at new administration of the math assessment. Everyone is aware that we administer in the state of Georgia a much more rigorous test,” said Bedden.

He went on to say that the standards in the math curriculum will not change.

Students who did not pass the retest can appeal to move on to the next grade. Those appeals must be filed by August 11. Parents interested in appealing should contact their child's school.
