Thousands in the Augusta area are getting new shoes.
Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and the Housing and Community Development Department handed out 5,000 pairs of shoes to ten organizations. Those organizations will distribute the shoes to low-income families.
The shoes were donated from the Atlanta-based group, Caring For Others, a homelessness prevention organization.
Vicki Johnson with the Augusta City Housing and Community Development said, "Many families are thinking about their children returning to school as well as other individuals who just don't have funds for shoes so this event has been more than a success."
Johnson told NBC Augusta they plan on making this an annual event and hope to add things like clothing and furniture.
