MCG is growing again, now the college has gobbled up the Fat Man's Forest property on Laney Walker Boulevard.
The first step in MCG's expansion? Cutting down Fat Man's Forest.
The school's foundation bought the property for $2.5 million Thursday, to make space for new student housing.
"It will allow us to decommission the housing and parking we have along 15th street and will free up 8 acres," said William Bowes, MCG's Vice President for Finance.
With new housing they'll be able to knock down the current
accommodations. Those sit right next door to Gilbert Manor, which is also in the sights of MCG's wrecking ball.
Bowes says MCG should acquire the housing development in the next month, then work can start on a new dental school.
"It's something long overdue," Bowes said. "We've needed to update our dental school."
Bowes says the facility's funding is already there but it's just part of the plans for the new land.
Bowes says it's enough land for MCG to expand and that's a sign the school will stay in Augusta.
