COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ South Carolina is replacing the Palmetto
Achievement Challenge Test that educators have said doesn't provide
enough information fast enough.
The state Education Department wants to find a name for the new
test to be given in the spring.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported that students, parents
and others suggested names and the department has chosen five
finalists:
PAL: Palmetto Assessment of Learning.
PASS: Palmetto Assessment of State Standards.
SCYE: South Carolina Yearly Evaluation.
STARS: State Test of Achievement and Readiness for Success.
STEP: Stat Test of Educational Progress.

The deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 1. State Education Superintendent
Jim Rex will announce the winner Sept. 3.
