Report: Ga. should increase investment in childcare programs

ATLANTA (AP) - A new study says state human resource officials
must increase the number of subsidized child care slots and boost
future budgets for a program that helps low-income Georgia families
with the cost of childcare.

The study by the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute released
Monday examines the major programs that provide subsidized child
care in Georgia _ Child Care and Parent Services (CAPS), Georgia
Pre-K, and Head Start/Early Head Start.

It says the Department of Human Resources' planned CAPS budget
of up to $217.5 million for state fiscal year 2010 forward will
serve a five-year low of just under 54,000 children per month,
while likely increasing the number of families on the waiting list.

The report urges officials to pool state and federal funds to
add an addition $100 million to the program's resources.
