“Might for right.” It's a lesson kids in the town of Harrisburg are being taught in new Tae Kwon Do classes at Bible Deliverance Temple.
The church is working towards kicking out crime among the youth in the Augusta community of Harrisburg.
Monday, the church began teaching the city's kids Tae Kwon Do with the help of 6 degree black-belt, Michael Weintraud.
"Harrisburg is a great place,” said Master Michael Weintraud. “We can see a lot of beauty here, but also a lot of violence and drugs."
Mary Prince has lived in community for the past 40 years. She's seen the good and the bad sides of Harrisburg.
"We get a bad rep,” says Prince. “It's sad cause there are good people here and there can be better people here through our children."
Prince believes Tae Kwon Do will help the youth of the community.
The martial art teaches kids discipline, self-control and responsibility. Master Weintraud runs the kids through various drills, including punches, kicks and even board breaking.
Although they're trained to fight, Master Weintraud says. Tae Kwon Do students are taught only to use their skills for self-defense.
"Our main goal is to develop the individual by letting them develop themselves,” says Master Weintraud. “Our first rule in Tae Kwon Do is respect parents and teachers. From that, everything will come."
"Often times, the worst kid can actually be the best kid with a little bit of direction."
Direction Master Weintraud is offering to everyone free of charge.
“It's not just for Harrisburg,” said Master Weintraud. “Anyone can come. Mayor, governor, doctor, bring your children, everybody come. No cost, just do something for somebody else.”
It’s a principle that community members hope will give their Harrisburg an elbow in the right direction.
