There have been five deaths since the beginning of the year, all on one road. The most recent was on Friday. In this good question, Ericka from Richmond County wants to know what's being done to make Highway 56 safer.
Law enforcement says speeding is the main reason Mike Padgett Highway is so dangerous.
"I've witnessed three accidents. Every time I hear sirens, the first thing I do is get on the phone and call," said Bernadette Bradley, driver.
Fearing the worst, Bradley may have lost a loved on Highway 56. She’s used 56 on a daily basis for almost a decade.
"I pulled out many days and trucks and cars aren't respecting the light," said Bradley.
"It's real hard driving around with people speeding all the time," said Lionel Jones, driver.
Jones is another driver we talked to. He says driving on this highway is no easy task.
“It's hard to get over. They zoom right past you. A lot of people stay in the left lane. Traffic can get congested because there's a lot of speeding going on," said Jones.
Traffic engineers tell NBC Augusta there have been three accidents with five fatalities since the beginning of the year on Highway 56. Plus, 49 accidents, 38 of which happened at intersections.
Just three months ago, Mike Padgett was closed down for 7 hours as first responders worked to clear the road after an accident that killed a family of three. Richmond County deputies say the driver of a Dodge Stratus lost control of the car and hit a dump truck. It then spun out of control and hit a tanker truck. Drivers say these deaths shouldn't be happening.
“That's a lot of people dying in such a short period of time. Something needs to be done, like issuing tickets for speeders,” said Jones.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office tells NBC Augusta Highway 56 is one of its main target areas. More deputies are patrolling on that road to catch speeders.

What we need is a driver alertness campaign. I have never seen such unattentive drivers before I came here.
