Another delay in construction of Augusta's new detention center

By Tina Terry tterry@nbcaugusta.com

There is another delay in Augusta's attempt to build a new detention center. City leaders have decided to reject all construction bids for the project.

The move could mean a longer wait for a new jail. Right now, leaders say there isn't enough space in the old jail. County Administrator Fred Russell says one bidder for the project didn't fill out forms properly and the rest of the bids were over budget.

Russell says he hopes to bid the project again and break ground by December.

NBC Augusta has learned a lawsuit has also tied up the construction process.

One construction company sued the city over the bid process. NBC Augusta spoke with one commissioner who says that issue could be resolved soon.
