Aiken County responders prepare to deploy after Hanna hits

By Dustin Blanchard dblanchard@nbcaugusta.com

Even though Hanna's forecast path has moved north of South Carolina, Aiken's Emergency Management Agency is still on high alert.

The county has a communications trailer, ready for deployment.

The trailer, which allows simultaneous communications between different agencies, is the only one of its kind in the southeast.

It can be set up to allow dozens of computers to connect to the internet -- and dozens of phones to make calls, even with no cellular or land-line service.

"Any organization out there -- we have the ability to connect via radio and be able to communicate," said Aiken County Emergency Manager David Ruth.

The trailer is staffed by volunteers. Even though the county has had it a few years, if needed, this would be its first hurricane deployment.
