Katrina evacuee sentenced to life in prison

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A Hurricane Katrina evacuee who fled to
Georgia from Louisiana has been sentenced to life in prison for a
November 2006 killing.

A Clarke County Superior Court jury found 39-year-old Rodney
Shepard guilty of murdering 22-year-old David Lamarious Lumpkin as
he slept in his east Athens home. He also was found guilty of
aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm in the
commission of a crime.

Prosecutors say Shepard and Eric Martin Hassel were hired by
another man to kill Lumpkin in revenge for an armed robbery. Soon
after, Shepard moved back to Louisiana, was caught by Marrero, La.,
police in February 2007 and extradited back to Georgia.

Hassel is scheduled to stand trial next year.
