AUGUSTA, Ga. - Volunteers gave the Augusta Canal a good cleaning Saturday.

A group called the First Saturday Crew plans to clean the third level of the canal each month.

They're transforming it into a whitewater course.

Organizers say they hope to spur economic growth and root out crime.

“We're removing a haven for people that commit crimes and then come hide in these woods,” said volunteer, Andy Cheek. “So by cleaning it up, we're removing a bad element and putting it back to good use.”

The group expects to finish its work by spring 2009.
