Countrywide employee sold customers information

By Trent Butler tbutler@nbcaugusta.com

Millions of people who have home loans with Countrywide are learning they need to worry about the possibility of identity theft.

That's because their personal information may have been sold.

In a letter sent out this week, Countrywide admits a former employee sold unauthorized personal information to a third party.

That information included names, addresses, social security numbers and application information.

The FBI arrested the employee and reports as many as two million people may have had their data stolen.

Countrywide is offering affected customers two years of free credit monitoring service.

Countrywide is urging them to sign up for the free service and to place a fraud alert on their credit reports.

Concerned customers can also put a credit freeze on their accounts. That action will prevent thieves from opening any new accounts.

If you are a Countrywide customer who received one of these letters, tell us your story.

Email us at producers@nbcaugusta.com.

I cannot believe that I shred, have a locked mailbox, never give out extra information, etc, and have my mortgage company do this to me. I would enjoy seeing a good crooked lawyer go after Countrywide on my behalf, but the lawyer will probably take me for more than what Countrywide has. I just can't do anything right!

In the letter, Countrywide generously promises, "We will also work with you to resolve unauthorized transactions on your Countrywide mortgage account related to this incident IF REPORTED TO US IN A TIMELY MANNER." So, if I'm not sufficiently vigilant to spot that money is being stolen from my account with Countrywide and don't tell them promptly, I'm on my own, even though the theft is due to THEIR failure to spot their own employee's illegal acts over a 2-year period?? They deserve to be sued!!

Also arrested was Wahid Siddiqi, 25, at his home in Thousand Oaks. Authorities alleged that he was a reseller of the Countrywide data. This is not Countrywide's fault. This was one person, who had priveleged information, and couldn't resist the temptation to use it. Many of us in our jobs have the same kind of privelege, but don't misuse it and our companies trust us. Would you want your company to restrict your ability to do your job because you MIGHT misuse the information you are privy to? What could Countrywide have done to prevent this? Yes, it sucks, but let's hold the person responsible for his poor choices.

First of all, it IS Countrywide's fault. They failed to take adequate steps to prevent unauthorized downloading of personal data. This guy was doing it for 2 years, and after hours. A rudimentary security system would have identified his activity. Second, this is a case where an attorney would "take it all". It is not a contingency case, but rather a case where we pay hourly and spread the cost over hundreds of thousands of people. We want lifetime protection for all coapplicants; no $$.

Last year in April I tried to refinance and only to find that my credit score was very low, when my credit was pulled ther were accounts opened that I didn't open and never paid. I will be joining all of you with the class action suite. I think cw should do more then just offer free credit monitoring. Or should I say Bank of America shoould do something. Isn't it time we stand up for our rights as Americans!!!!!

My husband go a letter about his information being sold a couple of months ago and I just got a letter a day ago. How long ago did they sell our info and how is credit protection gonna help now if someone already use our info to get credit. We are the ones that will have to fight to get it taken off our reports. That is not enough, countrywide should be held responsible, and do more than just credit protection.

I have been calling all day trying to get someone on the phone that can help with this mess. Countrywide has helped to tank our economy and our lives!

You guys are amazing all of the above comments talk abotu responsibility. Yes it was a mistake, yes it is a bad, but everything that is happeningt o you si not Countrywides fault. i wa affected I signed up for the service and placed the fraud alert no problem. There was no banking information or credit card information involved in the situation, so for those who are Blaming this on things that have happened to thier credit cards or banking situaiton, take a litle responsibility.

The reason that co borrowers were likely not affected is that the information taht was accessed was in a marketing data based stored uner the Primaries name. If you would all take a deep breath and speak to the agents with a litle respect, you'll find they are very accomidating and will provide you with information if you ask. it's the 21 century, no matter what precaoutions are in place soemone can break into a system if they want to chill

My husband and I recieved that same letter. Unfortunately, a little too late. Someone used our bank account info to pay for over 1,300 dollars in cell phone charges to T-Mobile. The worst part is that I can't get help from T-Mobile because they say they have to protect the other person's account. So, now I am behind a month on my mortgage payment and out that money.

I received the letter as well from Countrywide and know from working identity theft cases as a detective that your identity will be compromised over and over again. It is the victim of identity theft that carries the burden of constantly dealing with creditors etc., and unfortunately it won't stop. Countrywide should step up to the plate. A 2 year free subscription to the credit monitoring company is not enough. L Lawsuit? I am exploring the option.

Hello all, Like many of you , I am a victim of CHL.The palin truth is that many attorneys work hand in hand with ripping off homeowners everyday!! many attorneys appear to act within ur vested interest as you weep your tears of fear and frustration on their shoulders. Many hm owners must file bankcruptcy and not simply because they aquired homes they could not afford but in many cases because of ruthless tactics via Chl.Over charging, mods, fees,of which they can't explain.leave a e-m add 2help.
