AUGUSTA, Ga. - Investigators in Richmond County say identity theft is a problem that's growing every day.

They believe a tough economy could be playing a role. But, there are some things you can do to keep from becoming a victim.

Shakita Thurmond had her identity stolen.

"My dad always told me, 'Be careful with your Social Security number' and it went in one ear and out the other, but if I had of listened then, I wouldn't be going through this now," said Thurmond.

Thurmond said it started with a phone call to the electric company.

"When I called they told me, 'you have lights in Atlanta and in Augusta,' and I was like, 'noooo,'" said Thurmond.

It turns out someone who knew Thurmond took her Social Security number from some job applications in her apartment.

Thurmond soon discovered that same person used her identity for much more than electricity.

“I did a credit report and it's like all kinds of stuff on there," said Thurmond.

From a car to credit cards, it all totals to $15,000 of debts in her name without her permission. Thurmond isn’t alone.

Richmond County investigators say they've had more than 100 cases of identity theft this year.

"People are learning everyday methods of taking your identity and personal information and using it for their own gain," said Richmond County investigator, Shane McDaniel.

"You could blame it on the economy, you can blame it on high gas prices," said McDaniel.

So how can you protect yourself?

Richmond County investigators say never give any personal information over the phone.

McDaniel says if someone is calling you to collect a debt, they already have your information.

Also, check your credit score.

"You're allowed two times a year to check your credit. We suggest doing that. That way you can check what's being done to see if anyone's using your personal identification," said McDaniel.

McDaniel also says it’s extremely important to shred any papers that have personal information on it.
