AIKEN, S.C. - A family is homeless after fire caused an explosion that destroyed their home Saturday night.

Aiken County's fire department along with four other crews battled the fire.

The fire started around 7 p.m. near Gooseneck road in Aiken County.

Investigators don't know the initial cause, but they say portable oxygen tanks caused a large explosion after the fire had already started.

"We heard a big explosion prior to getting here," said New Holland Fire Chief, Dennis Jackson. "The house was on the ground as soon as we arrived on the scene. There was a lot of fire. Everything was caved into the middle. We really don't know what cause the fire at this time."

Nobody was home, but the family's dogs were lost in the fire and explosion.

The cause is still under investigation.
