Ga. elections official certifies results

ATLANTA (AP) - Secretary of State Karen Handel has certified Georgia's election results, making official a Dec. 2 runoff for the U.S. Senate.

Neither Republican Saxby Chambliss nor his Democratic challenger
Jim Martin earned the needed 50 percent plus one of the vote. Chambliss had 49.8 percent, according to official tallies. Martin pulled 46.8 percent. Libertarian Allen Buckley drew 3.4 percent of the vote.

The news will come as no surprise to Chambliss and Martin, who have been operating in full campaign mode since the day after the election.

There also will be runoffs to fill open seats on the Court of Appeals and Public Service Commission.

Handel certified the results more than a week after polls closed Nov. 4.
