Homeowner injured during fire in Edgefield County

MERRIWETHER, S.C.- Firefighters say a home on West Martintown Road in Edgefield County was destroyed by fire.

The fire started around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon in Merriwether.

NBC Augusta has learned the homeowner suffered second-degree burns. Investigators say she was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters say the homeowner, who is 86, also suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.

Traffic is backed up because of it there are fire trucks and other emergency vehicles there.
