Crime Alert: Augusta man's death turns into homicide investigation

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 79-year-old man as murder.

Deputies and family members found Robert Lee Smith dead in his home at 1107 Kent Street Friday, November 21. Family members asked the sheriff's office to check on Smith because he was not answering the door.

Investigators say Smith died from blunt force trauma. Smith was found lying face down with a water heater on his back.
