AUGUSTA, Ga. - Family members of the man shot by Richmond County deputies on Sunday say they don't know how much longer he'll be alive. As of 6:30 Tuesday night, Justin Elmore was on life support. His girlfriend and sister say family members are considering taking him off a ventilator.
Two deputies shot Elmore in the Cherry Tree Crossing housing project at 15th and Carver streets after they say Elmore tried to run over one of them when they stopped him on suspicion of being in a stolen vehicle.
The sheriff’s office also says they received a tip drugs and a weapon were in the vehicle he was driving.
Extra patrols have been added in the neighborhood to try to keep violence down.
"We are just riding around in pairs for safety," says Cpl. Charles Benson, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Cpl. Benson was one of the deputies patrolling the neighborhood Monday night.
"It was all quiet. We only had a few problems last night,” says Benson.
But things didn’t stay quiet.
"We heard five or six rounds going off at one time about 20 or 30 feet behind us," says Benson.
One of the bullets hit the license plate of Benson's patrol car. It’s one of the dangers deputies are facing while tensions are so high.
People who live in the neighborhood say the extra patrols are too much and not needed.
"We can't sit out here. Like a grown people, we have to be on a curfew. It's like we are in a prison," said Debbie Demmons, neighbor.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is waiting on ballistic result from the crime lab. They are also asking for any witnesses to come forward. If you have any information, call GBI at (706) 595-2575.
Colby Harold was one of the three officers who first responded to this incident. Harold arrested Elmore two weeks ago for disorderly conduct. Harold was not one of the two officers who fired shots at Elmore.
