Suspect shot by deputies at Cherry Tree Crossing dies

By NBC Augusta Staff

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The suspect shot by deputies at Cherry Tree Crossing housing project on Sunday has died.

Family members tell NBC Augusta 26 News Justin Elmore died at MCGHealth Tuesday evening.

Two deputies shot Elmore, 23, after they say he tried to run one of them over during a traffic stop at 15th and Carver streets.

Investigators stopped Elmore on suspicion he was driving a stolen vehicle. Officers also say they received a tip he had drugs and a weapon in the vehicle.

The shooting caused chaos throughout the housing project. Multiple fires were set in trash dumpsters, angry neighbors threw rocks and bottles at media and officers.

Fifty officers including Richmond County's SWAT Team were called out to help control the crowd.

If you want to stop all the gang violence, put a gang task force unit on the streets. Also Augusta needs to have at least four K-9 units. That will make people think twice about running.
