FDA approves sweeteners made by Coca-Cola, PepsiCo

MILWAUKEE (AP)- Federal regulators have approved two versions
of a new zero-calorie sweetener developed by Coca-Cola Company and rival PepsiCo.

Cargill Incorporated, which is marketing Coca-Cola's Truvia,
says it has received notification from the Food and Drug
Administration.

Cargill says the panel said it had no objection to the product,
calling it ``generally recognized as safe.''

PepsiCo said it also received a no-objection letter and the same
designation from the FDA related to its product PureVia. Both are
stevia-based beverage sweeteners, made from rebiana, a stevia-based
extract.
