AIKEN, S.C. - It's an eyesore on the way into Aiken, and some council members are worried it could be a safety hazard.

On Tuesday the Aiken County Council talked about putting in a $50,000 fence at taxpayer's expense to hide B&W Auto & Truck Parts from Highway 1.

Council members blocked that proposal, saying county taxpayers should not be responsible for blocking the view of the junkyard.

In fact, they say the trucks are illegally parked on the
shoulder.

The junkyard's owner has told 26 News he has a judge's order allowing him to park the trucks on the right-of-way.

But councilman Scott Singer says the order only allowed "temporary" parking. He says South Carolina law defines temporary as less than
72 hours.

Now the Council is asking the state to come in and remove the trucks.

"If you're driving 55 miles per hour down the road, these trucks keep getting closer and closer. The right of way laws are there for a reason, and that's to protect the public," Singer said.

Singer says safety is his top priority, but moving the vehicles off the right of way would help aesthetically, too.

Years back, the city and county put in trees to shield the view of the junkyard.

26 News asked Singer if Aiken County might remove the trucks from the right of way itself if the owner and the state don't. He says that is an option, but it's his last-resort.
