AUGUSTA, Ga. - It's puppy love on a whole different level. NBC Augusta 26 News shares the story of man who found a litter of pups and couldn't resist keeping one for himself.

“I love my little puppy," said Bill Braswell.

Freckles is Bill Braswell's new best friend.

The friendship started Monday when Braswell noticed something different about Freckle's mother, Smokey and her father, Freckles Senior.

"I walked up to the fence to call Smokey and Freckles and they didn't come to the fence and I looked and saw the little puppy in the couch cushion,” said Braswell.

Braswell would soon find out that puppy wasn't the only one.

He called CSRA Happy Tails Rescue to pick up the puppy.

Volunteer Steven Dennison started back to his car and noticed six other faces staring at him from a hole.

Smokey, the mother had given birth to the puppies under one of the buildings at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in south Augusta.

"All of them took off running so I was under there for at least three hours trying to pull them all out,” said Dennison.

With the help of another volunteer, Dennison was able to get the puppies out.

That's when Freckles' found a new home.

"I had told him I had wanted one of the puppies when they got him out,” said Braswell.

Braswell says she's as playful as they come.

"We play ball, she's got chew toys, rawhyde bones, everything. She chews on everything," said Braswell.

Even though Freckles found a home, there are still five more puppies Happy Tails say needs good homes.

"Hopefully when we take them up to Super Pets this weekend all of them will end up getting adopted,” said Dennison.

If you're thinking of adopting one of these puppies, Braswell has some advice for you.

"I'm really happy with this little puppy, she's a handful but she's worth it," said Braswell.

Freckle's parents are still on the lose. The Augusta Animal Shelter is hoping to catch the dogs and foster them until they become tame enough for adoption.

If you are interested in adopting one of the puppies call CSRA Happy Tails Rescue at (706) 309-9379.
