GROVETOWN, Ga. - New information tonight about a deadly burglary that could be linked to a separate shooting and 26 News has learned the connection doesn't end there.
Investigators in Richmond and Columbia County are working together to see if the deadly beating of a Grovetown woman could be tied to the shooting of her next door neighbor. 26 News is uncovering more to this story. Both women also worked for the same company.
Laverne Parsons died from injuries after she was beaten when she walked in on a burglary inside her Grovetown home. Her neighbor, Rebecca Sears, is recovering after being shot at the Healing Hands Physical Therapy on Highland Avenue Thursday night.
People living in the Orchard Hill neighborhood are still in disbelief after the death of Laverne Parsons.
“How it happened and why it happened. I don't even understand why,” Marcus Sparks said.
“I was really shocked,” Jesse Leech said.
“I think it was a fluke,” Jerred Anderson said.
But new details about the burglary and attack that led to Parsons’ death are showing that it may not have been a random act of violence.
“It’s strange that anyone would choose that part of the area at 8 in the morning,” Renee Moss.
Parsons’ home may not have been they only one burglarized Wednesday morning. Her next door neighbor's home also appears to have been broken into. That same neighbor, Rebecca Sears, was shot Thursday night while leaving her job at Healing Hands Physical Therapy on Highland Avenue.
NBC Augusta 26 News obtained this incident report where Sears says a man fired one shot which grazed her legs and told her if she didn't have his money it would be her face.
Another twist in this story is that Parsons and Sears were not only neighbors, but both worked for Healing Hands.
Parsons' neighbor Marcus Sparks who moved to the neighborhood to get away from violence says what happened so close to home may prove you can't escape it.
“Up here people move away from the violence but then the violent people come to the places that are quiet,” Sparks said.
According to the Healing Hands website, Parsons was an employee at the Thomson office. Sears worked at the Augusta location.
We want to reiterate that investigators have not linked the two crimes. But both Richmond and Columbia County Sheriff's Offices are working the two cases.
