AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta Trade Exhibition and Entertainment Center has been put on hold after the Tuesday’s commission meeting wrapped up.

Some commissioners were nearly at each others throats over the proposed construction of the TEE Center.

Many were obviously frustrated when an agreement could not be reached over whether or not to move forward with construction of the TEE Center and the revitalization of the Laney-Walker community tied with it.

With a vote of 5 yes, 4 no and one abstaining, supporters of the TEE Center will have to go back to the drawing board to work out a compromise.

One of the deal breakers involved the addition of a $25 million parking ramp that was not part of the original plan.

Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver tried to move the process forward saying that the project ‘was the most important initiative in Augusta today.’

With construction costs low, supporters of the project say now is the time to build. Those against it said the economy is just too shaky to make such an expensive and important decision.

"I think it's a bold move and some people are more cautious than others,” said Fred Russell, Richmond County’s City Administrator. “In the end, those who are cautious keep those that aren't from running off a cliff, but you need to look at where you're going and what you want to do."

City officials say the TEE Center and Laney-Walker redevelopment project is not dead, just on hold until another plan can be worked up.
