EVANS, Ga. - The Grovetown mother and son accused of beating a next door neighbor to death say they didn't do it.

Rebecca Sears and her son Christopher Bowers pleaded not guilty to in court Wednesday. The two are charged with the murder of Laverne Parsons. She was Sears' next door neighbor.

The mother and son could get the death penalty if found guilty. The lawyer representing Bowers says both suspects are extremely upset. Sears was crying in court and Bowers could be seen mouthing 'I love you' and 'keep your head up' to his mother as they left the courtroom.

Bowers' lawyer says he is now working on collecting evidence to prove his client's innocence.

“We're looking for every piece of film, every document, every witness that will show exactly where our clients were during the time of the alleged murder,” Jacque Hawk said.

Now that they pleaded not guilty both will give an alibi to the court. They are also charged with armed robbery and burglary. Bowers' lawyer also said that in the future it's possible that they'll enter a motion to have Sears and Bowers tried separately.

Bowers and Sears are expected to be in court again for a preliminary hearing on July 7.
