Edgefield burglaries continue

By Arielle Clay aclay@nbcaugusta.com

EDGEFIELD, S.C. - Thieves have targeted more than 20 homes in a string of Edgefield burglaries.

The break-ins started at the beginning of April. Investigators say they believe some are linked. Most happened around the Martintown Road area.

NBC Augusta 26 News spoke with one victim who lives on Martintown Road and had a gun, computer, and jewelry among other things stolen.

He says he's increased security at his home.

A neighbor who lives down the street from another burglarized home says he's being extra careful to protect himself and his family.

“We do not answer the door unless we know who it is. Got double latches on the door and we keep them latched. Some of the kids tease us about being scared but I tell them they better be scared, too, because it's real serious now, the crime is,” L.C. Atkinson said.

In all, the thieves have taken more than $100,000 in stolen items.

the cops sitting in parking lots talking no wonder. You use to see police drive around the streets more. Now they sit and wait til it happens. also cell phones next to their ears.

Have them come to my house, I will welcome them with open arms (fire arms that is). I get extremely mad at these type of people because all the unnecessary inconveniences they create (worrying about locking doors, higher insurance/tax rates, etc.). When are we going to be like Saudi Arabia and start using out of the box punishment on these people to provide a real deterrence instead of locking them up for a few years and then letting them free to do the same thing.
