WASHINGTON, Ga. - A former Washington Police Department secretary is accused of embezzling more than $40,000.

Tammy Land is charged with theft by taking. She also worked as Clerk of Court for Wilkes County.

GBI agents tell NBC Augusta 26 News a routine audit led to the investigation.

During Land’s time as Clerk of Court in Wilkes County `she worked with several judges and lawyers.

The ones we spoke to say they can't believe the allegations against her.

"I'm stunned and I'm startled. It just doesn't seem like the Tammy Land I know would do," said Michael Horgan, attorney.

"I worked for her for six years as judge and she was clerk of the court and it was an impeccable relationship," said Irvin Cheney, former judge.

Land is innocent until proven guilty, however if the allegations are true, people who know her say they'd be devastated.

"It would break my heart...that's all I can tell you, it would just break my heart," said Cheney.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still working on the case.

They say Land took the money over the course of two years.

Land's charge is a felony and if convicted, she could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.

you are really offended by comments saying that someone could have set her up. You are the ignorant one because if you think that anyone in that police dept set her up you are wrong. I guess if it were Asst Chief Glenn or Joe Nelson they would be guilty off the rip huh? Would you say that someone set them up? I don't think so.

I know Tammy personally. And yes you would be shocked too. But, that still doesn't excuse her for what she has done. Yes she is innocent until proven guilty, but if she were black she would be guilty from the get go. Many times faith is put into people and they take advantage of that. Here she was with 2 jobs abusing the system, and there are out of work people who can't find work and would be honest in performing the job. But in WILKES CO. its all about who you know so that's WHAT THEY GET!!!

Do anybody else realize that white people steal and get away with it all the time. They will probably send her home and say "now you knew better than to steal that money can you start paying it bacck at least until everybody forget about it." What would the comments be if she was Black?

She is innocent until proven guilty but if she is found guilty she should be prosceuted to the fullest extent of the law because she was in a position of trust for the county and failed big time.

This doesn't seem like the the Tammy I met. I have had a few meetings with her and this defenitly seems out of character from what I knew. But once again let the system play this out and see what her peers say.

I have a COUPLE of family members who have been on the wrong side of the law, and I do think that they to should be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law if they break the law. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW. WE WERE TAUGHT TO DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES. FOR EVERY ACTION THERE IS A REACTION, GOOD OR BAD, DEAL WITH EITHER.

Guilt until proven innocent has become society's mindset. If she is guilt, then she will get her punishment. However, let the system play out and find the truth. Is there not a chance that there is another explanation? She IS innocent until proven guilty!

I don't know her, I am actually new to the area and was shocked that this happened. I don't feel sorry for her because there are people who are WORKING AND MAKING A LIVING HONESTLY. The economy is rough right now, why use her financial problems as an excuse IF thats what it is. I don't have faith in the justice system, if you have money, you get off, if you don't, you are screwed. She is guilty but she is so embarrassed she won't admit it.

people really want to believe the news and that everyone is guilty right off the bat.she'll probably get a plea, why not,if you have a choice of facing 20 years to a jury who's already made up their minds and chances are know they're toast or taking what the DA gives them. Most of the time when the DA offers a deal it's because they're case is not a strong case,it they know they can win then they won't offer it.some of u peole don't even believe in ur own legal system, innocent until proven guilty

for the record i don't know this lady or anyone associated with her, working in the legal system you see alot of dirty things go down. I am not saying she's innocent or guilty but let her have her due process, you must know her and have an issue with her yourself to be so self right-righteous and judgemental of someone you don't suppose to know. I bet if this was you or one of your family members, you would not be so quick to them under the bus.

I know her and she is a good person. No one should steal, but sometimes people are in situations that they feel are desperate and dont know any other way to get out. I am sure she is regretting this, no doubt but she knows she will have to face what ever punishment she gets. God Bless Tammy and her family, this will be a long and gruesome process for all of them.

She did it, and now have to pay the consequences. OR it could be the TEMPTATION got the best of her, might be trying to keep up with the JONES', lol, let's see how she deals with the pressure of being locked up! LOL, she must be soooo embarressed to face her family and friends.
