$100,000.
That's what it'll take for a former Columbia County county teacher to get out of jail tonight. A judge set the bond this morning for Melissa Chase.
She's charged with sexual assault after allegedly having a month long sexual relationship with one of her students.
The 28 year-old former teacher and softball coach at Harlem High School walked into the courtroom this morning for her bond hearing. Standing by her side, her parents and attorney.
The prosecution asked Judge Carl Brown to deny bond for the former softball coach calling her a flight risk and insisting she would try to make contact with the 16 year-old victim.
The judge DID grant Chase $100,000 bond but not without some stipulations.
"No contact with the victim that is alleged what so ever. That's direct or indirect contact," Judge Carl Brown said.
"Anyone would have to take these charges seriously. I don't think the community is aware of the extent to which the punishment could affect her for the rest of her life," Chase attorney Greg Leopard said.
Leopard called the $100,000 bond excessive.
After the hearing, Melissa's family would not comment on the case.
If she's found guilty of sexual assault, she faces up to 30 years behind bars.
