EVANS, Ga. - The search is still on for a black bear that's been spotted throughout Columbia County since Monday.
NBC Augusta 26 News joined the search today in Evans.
26 News spoke with Columbia County Animal Control Manager Linda Fulmer who got a first hand look at the bear on the run.
She says it's not 400 pounds, more like 150 pounds and it didn't seem agitated by all the onlookers.
He may be smarter than your average bear. Because, so far, the only way he's been captured are by pictures.
He's given Columbia County officials a run for their “honey” since Monday.
Wednesday morning he was spotted again. This time, the Department of Natural Resources was called in to help with the chase.
The bear was first spotted crossing the lake in the Woodbridge subdivision.
Officials say it then made its way into the woods and into the Silver Lake subdivision.
That's where Animal Control set up shop in hopes of catching him.
Norma Rogers lives in Silver Lake off Washington Road in Evans. She says she first heard the news when Columbia County Animal Control came knocking on her door.
"We have a wooded area in our back yard so I began looking," said Rogers.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says is fine to look, as long as you don't get too close.
"Typically with bears the best thing for us to do is just leave them alone and keep them moving. Hopefully they'll make their way out of the area,” said I.B. Parnell with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Parnell says the young bear probably wandered into the area looking for a place to call his own, away from other male bears.
Parnell says until he does, don't panic if he comes your way.
"If the bear has been seen three miles from your house you don't have to keep your kids in for the rest of the week, he's not out hunting children," said Parnell.
Parnell says the entire family doesn't have to hibernate. He says if the bear comes close to your house, he’s probably after one thing: food.
So, keep your trash cans out of the driveway until the garbage man comes.
"Leave it alone, stay out of the way-let it keep moving," said Parnell.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says they deal with anywhere from one to five bear sightings during the summer.
They say most of the bears migrate from Gainesville, Florida, or Macon, Georgia.
