AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta-Richmond County commissioners are working on transforming the city of Augusta.

ShieldsDESIGN met with commissioners and asked them to create an Advisory Committee to help come up with a vision for Augusta.

They want the committee created by this time next month, so they can start meeting every six weeks.

They also want a diverse group of city leaders, department heads and business leaders like representatives from Fort Gordon, Georgia Power, MCG and the industrial and real estate communities to help create a unique plan that includes all of Augusta.

“It's time to think of Augusta as one place and get away from the idea of a city and a county, north and south, or this side of Gordon Highway and that side of Gordon Highway,” said John Sheilds, SheildsDESIGN.

They hope to have a draft of the City's Master Plan by next April. Commissioners will be able to vote on a final plan by the end of July.

There are no exact details available in the projects in store, but they will focus on building off Augusta's strong points.

The City's Master's Plan is an extension of the Urban Area Plan which focuses on development in Downtown Augusta and North Augusta.
