Update: Victim's name released in North Augusta deadly accident

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - The Aiken County Coroner's Office says Gregory A. Maree, 35, was killed in a car accident around 9:45 a.m. Sunday.

The crash happened just past East Buena Vista Road on Highway 1 in North Augusta.

According to the coroner, Maree was traveling south toward Augusta when he left the roadway in a curve and struck the sidewalk near the Cheap Cigarettes store. After striking the sidewalk his car then hit two abandoned, above ground gas tanks that were empty.

The collision with the tanks caused the vehicle to catch fire.

The coroner says Maree was not wearing a seat belt.

This is the 20th fatal crash in Aiken County this year.
