Folly Beach considers banning alcohol after July 4th weekend
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The mayor of one South Carolina coastal The Post and Courier of Charleston reports piles of beer cans, bottles, cups, abandoned coolers and towels were collected Monday. Mayor Carl Beckmann Jr., estimated 40,000 people visited the beach during the weekend and says he was shocked by the amount of beer cups and cans. Folly is the only beach in the Charleston area allowing alcohol on the beach. Beckmann doesn't think locals would be so disrespectful and says the trash must have been left by out-of-towners who, he said, "have no regard for anybody other than themselves.'' I am sure that there were containers for people to put trash but honestly you see it all over, I was looking at the trash in the river while walking there just yesterday and thought how disgraceful that people have such disregard for our environment. I don't think you can blame it all on outsiders though because I see locals right here in this area doing it in places that mostly locals go to. Inappropriate? It's a shame that most of those dumping are part of the neighborhood. Now we live in a ghetto! Inappropriate? I didn't have any trash so I wasn't looking but I didn't see any. But I was there on Friday not Saturday so..... Hell, I didn't even know you could drink on the beach. If I would have known, I would have. Inappropriate? I stayed right down from Center Street and when leaving the public access there are trash cans all were full, so not sure were all of this trash is. It sounds like to me this is just an excuse to band drinking. Inappropriate?
