EXCLUSIVE: Unofficial results show Glenn Hills Middle makes AYP for the first time

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Scores are out for Georgia's CRCT, and statewide schools have seen an increase. The Criterion Referenced Competency Tests are important to schools. The results determine if a school makes adequate yearly progress, or AYP, as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act.

Test scores for Richmond County’s elementary and middle school students improved in all areas this year, but most dramatically in math and science. Test results for third, fifth, and eighth grades are going to affect what schools make AYP.

Those results won't be released for a few more weeks. NBC Augusta 26 News was the only station to find out that Glenn Hills Middle school made AYP for the first time ever.

"What really worked in my heart is and made me feel relieved is that we didn't just make it by safe harbor but we made straight out AYP,” said Glenn Andrews, Glenn Hills Middle School principal.

Superintendent Dana Bedden tells 26 News, Hephzibah and John M. Tutt Middle Schools are also predicted to make AYP for the second year in a row and will get off the needs improvements list.

It looks like Sego Middle has made AYP for the third consecutive year and will now be a Title 1 Distinguished School.

Tubman Middle, which made AYP last year, did not pass this year. Bedden says math was one of the main reasons why the school didn't make the cut. Also, Morgan Road Middle is not expected to make AYP.

NBC Augusta 26 News wants to stress these are not the official results. AYP will be released in a few more weeks.

The county’s graduation rates are also expected to increase from 63.8 percent to 68.4.

Bedden tells NBC Augusta 26 News he plans on taking a proposal to the school board to find a way to work directly with the school and hold them accountable for the scores. 26 News will learn more about the plan in the next few weeks.
