AUGUSTA, Ga. - Richmond County is going a lot greener.

Augusta-Richmond County commissioners passed a plan to boost recycling Tuesday afternoon.

Under the new plan, the county's solid waste system will be set for the next 10 years and an increased recycling program is a big part of that.

Richmond County will join others in the state of Georgia to increase recycling to 25 percent of all waste collected.

Communities and neighborhoods will be educated on how they can work recycling into their areas.

"We'll do things like public education; we'll do some advertising,” said Lori Videtto, Assistant Director, Augusta Solid Waste. “Make sure people have recycling carts; things like that. That stuff will make a big difference in it, because recycling, if you make it easy, people will do it."

Richmond County is expected to grow in size, so the plan also ensures the Augusta landfill can handle the increased trash load.

I am from NY as well, and was surprised at the limited recycling. this is great news! The bottle returns were very great to motivate people into recycling. Locally, in Evans there is "The Green Way Store" which has a recycling bin for use behind their store on Washington Road. They recycle plastics 1 - 6 (some Styrofoam is marked with 6!) and you can go inside the store to recycle glass containers... Much closer than Atlanta! http://thegreenwaystore.com Thanks to those who recycle!

I lived in Buffalo NY before moving here (to Columbia Co.), and was amazed at the amount of recycling that wasn't done. We used to have automated collection bins in the grocery stores that would tabulate how much you were owed for your returnable bottles and cans. Plus, the city provided recycle bins to households. It is absolutely true that if it's easy, folks will do it. Could you guys *please* talk to the folks in Columbia County?
