AUGUSTA, Ga. - A new proposed government health care plan is one of the reasons University Hospital has laid off 30 employees.

The hospital is bracing for more than $100 million in cuts.

University Hospital is one of the largest participants of Medicare in the state of Georgia and the Largest in the Georgia-Carolina area.

University Hospital says that as the government plans to re-work the Medicare/health care system, the hospital will take a huge hit in the coming years.

To prepare for the cuts, University Hospital merged different medical wards and eliminated less necessary positions. University Hospital says the cuts won't affect their ability to treat patients, but they will have to do more with less.

"If we are hit with all the cuts that are predicted right now, it will be $119 million over the next 10 years and that comes at a time when our patients are aging and they will need our services more than ever," said Rebecca Sylvester, Spokeswoman, University Hospital.

All of the employees laid off were given a 60 day notice that the layoffs were coming.

As of now, the hospital says they don't have any more layoffs planned, but they will continue to look for ways to consolidate.

THIS IS TO BOTH ANONYMOUS RESPONCES. I HAVE WORKED IN A HOSPITAL FOR 31 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH POOR CARE AS MY WIFE JUST RECEIVED AT DOCTORS HOSPITAL. SHE WAS MISDIAGNOSED AND SENT HOME AFTER WAITING 5 HOURS IN ER. WE HAD TO RETURN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND WE SAT IN ER FOR 7 HOURS BEFORE GETTING A ROOM. MY WIFE WAS VERY ILL AND WILL NEED SURGERY. THE CARE SHE GOT ON THE FIFTH FLOOR WAS TERRIBLE ALSO. I'VE PAID FOR FAMILY INSURANCE FOR 25 YEARS, SO I HAVE GOOD COVERAGE. WE WILL NEVER RETU

The ER @ Doctor's Hospital isn't 12 hours. It's funny that the general public doesn't understand that it's an Emergency Room! If someone comes in and has been hurt really bad they're going to be seen FIRST verses someone with a broken finger. HELLO!!! Be patient when going to the ER and only go to the ER when it's an emergency not when you want a place to stay for the night or YOU DON'T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE... Ignorant people make me laugh!!!!

Their ER is way too slow. My husband, who was seriously ill with a bacterial infection went to university's ER and we waiting 7 hours, before finally having to walk out. It was RIDICULOUS...but they were calling people back who were sitting in the waiting roon laughing and carryoing on, I will never go back to their ER. And as far as I am concerned, as the article states "They will have to do more with less", is not the attitude I prefer when it comes to my health or the health of others.

Uh the wait at Doctor's is not 12 hours! I KNOW because I work there! If the wait time is several hours there then the wait time at University or MCG is usually twice as long.

What they need to do is open a unit for those who are overweight. They would make money by doing the surgery that these people need so badly. Another thing is their ER is too slow!!
