GRANITEVILLE, S.C. – An Aiken County middle school teacher, charged with eight sex crimes against a former student, is out of jail Tuesday night.
Tammy Key, 38, is staying with her parents and three children in Aiken after she was released from the Aiken County Detention Center.
Key is accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.
The student was 14-years old at the time, according to Aiken County Investigators.
The incidents occurred at Leavelle McCampbell School in Graniteville.
Aiken County Investigators say Key had sexual intercourse and oral sex with the student at both the school and her home.
The former student is now 18-years-old. He recently told deputies about the incidents.
For the past two years, Key has been a math teacher at LBC Middle School in Warrenville.
When asked, one of her co-workers said Key is a fabulous teacher.
One of her neighbors says Key knew she was going to be arrested for two weeks. So, she turned herself in voluntarily on Monday.
Her neighbor says, she knows the teen who accused Key, and doesn't think he's telling the truth.
"I think she’s the sweetest lady you’d ever meet, and I know she did not do this. She'll be cleared of this charge, it's just not true. It's just not true,” her neighbor said.
Principals from both schools said they did not want to comment.
Key is now on administrative leave from LBC School, according to the Board of Education.
The Aiken County School Board is calling this a very serious matter and it wants to protect both the students and the teacher.
Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating both Tammy Key and the student who made the accusations.
