GRANITEVILLE, S.C. - Investigators are searching for who shot up two apartments in an Aiken County complex.

The shooting happened Wednesday morning at Kalmia Apartments in Graniteville. People living there say they hear gunshots at least once a week.

But this most recent shooting hit much closer to home than usual for one family.

“It's an okay place to live but it's just the violence that goes on outside that's why I stay inside,” Crystal Allen said.

Despite her efforts, that violence still found a way into Allen's home.

“I can't even describe how scared I was,” Allen said.

Allen was awakened by about a dozen gunshots Wednesday . It’s not an uncommon situation at Kalmia Apartments, but this time, four hit her house.

“Usually when I hear gunshots I wait and look out the window but I don't know. I just popped up and ran in here to check on my kids,” Allen said.

”I saw the bullet come through the floor. I jumped on the bed and grabbed both my boys by the legs and took them to my room.”

When deputies arrived at the scene they discovered something that frightened Allen even more than hearing the gunshots.

“The bullet came through the wall and went right here where my baby's head was laying. Right here beside his head through the wall,” Allen said.

Allen's next door neighbor was also a victim of the shooting. A bullet hit her SUV, shattering the glass.

“It scares me because I don't have a problem with anyone out here. I don't really know that many people out here,” Sandra Mincey said.

Investigators say the women likely weren't being targeted and the shooting appears to be random.

That's no consolation for the mother whose sleeping child was just inches from being shot.

“I went downstairs and hugged my baby because that could have been his head he could have been taken away that fast,” Allen said.

Investigators say they get calls on this area every so often but not weekly. The women told 26 News the gunshots are so common that many people don't think to call the police when they hear them. They say that's why the sheriff's office may not know about the gun activity going on there.
