NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. – Several South Carolina and Georgia law enforcement agencies are investigating a crime spree that crossed multiple counties.
North Augusta Public safety says it all started in Williston. A man driving a retired law enforcement vehicle approached an elderly woman on Highway 39 in Williston. The man stole checks from the woman and left from the scene. The woman called and reported the checks stolen immediately after the man left.
The man then went to The First Citizens Bank in Beech Island and attempted to cash one of the woman’s checks where he was denied.
The man then drove to North Augusta and attempted to rob a middle aged woman at a shopping center on Knox Avenue. The woman says he came up behind her. When she turned around the man had a gun pointed at her stomach. The woman screamed and the man took off.
With help from witnesses, a North Augusta Public Safety officer in an unmarked car identified the man’s vehicle and followed him into Augusta.
Public Safety alerted the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Richmond County then chased the man for a short distance. He jumped out of the moving car near the ramp onto Bobby Jones Expressway and Sand Bar Ferry Road. Deputies caught up with him and arrested him.
Now deputies and investigators are interrogating the man to see if another suspect was involved. That’s because the name he gave on arrest and the name used to try and cash the checks in Beech Island are different.
No one was hurt.
