AIKEN, S.C. – An Aiken County grandmother wants answers. She says her 6-year-old grandson was choked by an Aiken County employee while he was riding a school bus for children with special needs.

“Don't hurt my child. He's just a baby,” Melinda Harp said.

Melinda Harp says, Friday afternoon her 6-year-old grandson's bus driver choked him while he was riding home from school.

“We were sitting at the dinner table and he pulled his shirt aside and we saw marks on his neck. Michael said a lady pulled him by his throat and put marks on his neck,” Harp said.

Aiken Public Safety officers saw the marks when Harp filed an incident report. She says, turning to the law was a last resort after leaving messages with the county's transportation department and Chukker Creek Elementary School.

“I haven't heard nothing since Friday,” Harp said.

Harp says, she doesn't know what caused the problem. Michael has special needs and sometimes has outbursts, but Harp says she doesn't believe that played into Friday's incident.

“It's a possibility but he hasn’t done that. He's on medicine,” Harp said.

She says she just wants to get to the bottom of what happened Friday afternoon.

“I want to see justice and make sure it doesn't happen to another child,” Harp said.

Harp says the principal of Chukker Creek called her and said she would look into it.

Aiken Public Safety says the next step in its investigation is to interview the 6-year-old.

That's horrible. If you can't work with children, let alone disabled children, you shouldn't be working with them. It takes a person with a lot of love and caring to work with these children. They're children that need special attention. That's why they are called special needs children. Duh!
