NBC NEWS - The first critical results came in from Virginia, and the news was a disappointment for Democrats.

In the state where President Obama won just last year and campaigned with Democrat Creigh Deeds this election cycle, it is Republican Bob McDonnell who will be the next governor.

"Tonight's great victory is a clear sign that we the people are fed up with the Obama, Pelosi, Kaine agenda," said Republican Virginia House Minority Whip Eric Cantor.

Still, Virginia exit polls showed 55 percent of voters said the President was not a factor, and early in the day the White House rejected the notion he would be.

"I don't believe that local elections in Virginia and New Jersey portend a lot about legislative success or political success in the future. I just don't," said White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs.

But political success was a definite struggle for the President's fellow Democrats.

In the usual Democratic stronghold of New Jersey incumbent Governor Jon Corzine fell to Republican Chris Cristie.

While in upstate New York it is still tight in a race that saw Republican Dede Scozzafava drop out this weekend after a major split between GOP conservatives and moderates.

Bill Owens could be the first Democrat elected to that congressional district since the 1800s if he can overcome Conservative Doug Hoffman.

How much the President weighed into any of the races is up for debate and sure to be talked about in coming days.

With the polls now closed, it seems the spin can now begin.
