AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta lawmakers are considering ending a tax exemption for people 65 or older.

Richmond County School Superintendent Dana Bedden says, if you turn 65, you may have to pay local school taxes, depending on your income.

The change would require a referendum and the legislature's support.

If passed, the law would bring about $7 million into the school district's budget. Those already 65 may be grandfathered in.

It is so funny how things can evolve into such a taboo issue. Persons who are retired or 65 should consider property taxes their contribution to their grandchildren and the future generations. Just because your children are grown does not mean your responsibility to help the next generation is over. More backwards conservative thinking.

I can't believe that you are thinking of raising taxes on 65 or older people. We give can goods help out free in the schools and all of our children are grown and paying taxes and I really think you should think about other things like give your bones to the school

This is so much BS, raising taxes in a recession dosen't help anyone. If you need more money to operate then cut costs. You can't tell me that you can't find anything in the in the budget that is not needed. Cut expenses first.
